As reporter, editorial writer and political editor at The Mercury News for 20 years; as communications director for Gov. Gray Davis and as director of the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State, I never personally endorsed a candidate for elective office.
But I now find myself enthusiastically rooting for Ann Ravel, a candidate for State Senate in District 15.
As Santa Clara County Counsel, as chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission, appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown, and as chair of the Federal Elections Commission, appointed by President Barack Obama, Ann has been a tireless, principled, thoughtful public servant – exactly the kind of person we all should want in public office.
You can divide people in politics into two groups: those who want to do well and those who want to do good. Ann is one of those rare people who just wants to do good.
