Quality Education for Every Student
Providing a world-class education to every student in California from Pre-K through college must be a top priority for our State Legislature. Our state’s future and economy depend on providing an excellent education to all students. We must ensure equality in our education system. We have the fifth largest economy in the world, but we are not fully investing in our future generations.
I support raising teacher pay. Quality instruction must be our highest priority and this starts with supporting our teachers. We can’t blame educators who are frequently expected to work overtime or pay out of pocket for supplies. It is unacceptable that our teachers are expected to pay for their own substitute when they exhaust sick leave. We must pay teachers fair wages and work to provide affordable housing in our communities in order to retain and attract top talent.
I support free community college for the first two years. I will champion legislation that expands the CalGrant program, ensures no student goes hungry, and increases access to mental health services on campus. Student loan debt is a $1 trillion crisis across the country, and California should offer a tax incentive to employers that contribute to student loan repayment.
I support vocational training funding. Californians should have access to multiple pathways to family-sustaining jobs and a successful future. That’s why we should fund vocational training programs and apprenticeship programs to help train more workers with the skills they need to thrive. This workforce helps generate the engine of California’s economy.
As Santa Clara County Counsel, I implemented a first-of-its kind program requiring that foster youth receive Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to ensure that they receive the education to which they are entitled.
