Protecting Immigrant Families
I know from personal experience the challenges and hurdles faced by immigrant families in California. I was raised by a strong Brazilian mother and American father. When I was 11, my family moved from Chile to San José, and I am fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
My experience underscores what it means to be an American. We should welcome immigrants who enrich our country and strengthen our economy. We are a nation of immigrants, and we must defend and protect immigrant families.
We are facing a critical moment in history, where immigrants continue to be targeted at the federal level – and those seeking asylum are treated as criminals. I support Sanctuary County and Sanctuary State laws, which state the federal government is the agency obligated to enforce our immigration laws. Cities and counties must make sure our local communities can remain safe for all people. Immigrants should not be the targets of discriminatory laws or policies, and we must ensure that the basic human rights of every person are protected in California.
