Ann Ravel Awarded 2020 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction

San Jose, CA – California State Senate candidate Ann Ravel announced today that she has been awarded the 2020 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. This recognition is reserved for candidates who advocate for gun violence prevention and have made a commitment to govern with gun safety in mind.

Moms Demand Action is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, and is the nation’s largest grassroots volunteer network working to end gun violence in America. With nearly six million supporters and volunteer chapters in every state, Moms Demand Action campaigns for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families.

“I am honored to receive this distinction from the grassroots gun violence prevention activists who have joined together with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America,” said Ravel. “As our next State Senator, I will stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby – starting with reforming our campaign finance system they use to buy so much influence – so we can end the senseless violence in our community.”

Ravel has long been a vocal advocate for gun violence prevention, dating back to the late 1990’s when as Santa Clara County Counsel she worked to eliminate gun shows at the Fairgrounds. She is also a strong supporter of an assault weapons ban, the expansion of the “red flag” law that keeps guns away from people deemed to be a danger to themselves and others and calling for expanded access to mental health services.

Ravel’s lifetime of public service has been defined by her fights to protect consumers and empower voters against the outsized influence and financial power of special interests in our elections. Twice she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve in his administration – first fighting on behalf of consumers at the Department of Justice, then working to make our elections fairer and more transparent as head of the Federal Elections Commission. Understanding campaign finance reform is the gateway to progress on any policy issue, Ravel has dedicated her career to ensuring voters have a say in elections that ultimately decide key voters and policy reforms.

Ravel was also appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as Chair of California’s Fair Political Practices Commission, leading a first-in-the-nation fight against the Koch Brothers and their illegal dark money network. As Santa Clara County’s chief attorney, she took on tobacco companies and won support for better healthcare, won pioneering cases protecting consumers, was a champion of a precedent-setting case to safeguard children from lead paint and was never afraid to defend equality for all people.
