San Jose, CA – Today, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zach Friend announced his endorsement of Ann Ravel for State Senate District 15. Friend has served on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors since 2013, winning his reelection in March. Like Ravel, Friend is a veteran of Barack Obama’s team, having worked as a spokesman on his campaign in 2008. Earlier this month, Ravel was the only candidate in a California state legislature race to earn the endorsement of President Obama.
“Helping to elect Barack Obama as President of the United States, I learned the importance of choosing compassionate, thoughtful leaders who are committed to making government work better for all of us. That’s why I’m proud to join President Obama in offering my strong support for Ann Ravel for State Senate,” said Friend.
“One of the best things about working for President Obama was seeing how he inspired young people like Zach to believe that government can work better if we’re willing to fight for it,” said Ravel. “I’m running for State Senate because I too believe that we the people can hold the government accountable by ensuring it represents all of us.”
Friend joins a growing coalition of distinguished leaders and organizations who are supporting Ravel’s bid for State Senate. In recent months, Ravel has announced endorsements from President Barack Obama, Congresswoman Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and members of the San Jose City Council, ten incumbent members of the California legislature, the Silicon Valley Organization, Latinas Lead California and EMILY’s List. During the primary, The Mercury News called Ravel a “standout” candidate and said “Ravel is the one with the strength of character and respect to make a difference on the most important issues facing Californians.”
Ravel’s lifetime of public service has been defined by her fights to protect consumers and empower voters. Twice she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve in his administration – first fighting on behalf of consumers at the Department of Justice, then working to make our elections fairer and more transparent as head of the Federal Election Commission.
Ravel was also appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as Chair of California’s Fair Political Practices Commission, leading a first-in-the-nation fight against the Koch Brothers and their illegal dark money network. As Santa Clara County’s chief attorney, she took on tobacco companies and won support for better healthcare, won pioneering cases protecting consumers, was a champion of a precedent-setting case to safeguard children from lead paint and has always strongly defended equality for all.
